The long-awaited Sailing update in Old School RuneScape has finally arrived, and with it comes a brand-new item for the Hunter skill: the Horn of Plenty. This off-hand item provides an invisible boost to your Hunter level, offering both utility and excitement for players looking to maximize their hunting efficiency. Today, we’re diving into what the Horn of Plenty does, how it performs in practice, and whether it’s worth the investment.

What is the Horn of Plenty?

The Horn of Plenty is obtained from griffins and offers players an invisible boost to the Hunter skill:

    • Uncharged: +2 boost to Hunter.
    • Charged with Griffin feathers: +4 boost to Hunter.
    • Charge consumption: One charge every 25 Hunter catches.
    • Special effect: When toggled on, it provides a 1 in 10 chance to double a Hunter catch, including chinchompas.

The item is designed to enhance both XP gains and profits, particularly for high-level players hunting black chinchompas in the Wilderness.

    First Impressions: Price and Charging

On release day, the Horn of Plenty proved to be a highly demanded item. After some searching, it was purchased for 30 million OSRS gold—a hefty price for an item that only provides an invisible level boost and a chance for double catches. Charging the horn is simple and cheap:

    • Griffin feathers cost: 50 GP each.
    • Number of charges: 2,000 feathers give 2,000 charges.

This means the upkeep cost is practically negligible, making the Horn of Plenty an appealing choice once the initial market hype settles.

    Testing the Horn of Plenty

To truly gauge its impact, I tested the Horn of Plenty on a max main account at my favorite hunting spot: Black Chins in the Wilderness. With 88 Hunter, I aimed to push toward 99 Hunter while testing the horn.

    Setup:

    • Method: Three-tick hunting for maximum efficiency.
    • Gear: Anti-PK setup including the Staff of the Dead, Alasian Spirit Shield, Zerite Crossbow, Void Waker, and Nox Halberd.
    • Objective: Compare catches per hour with and without the Horn of Plenty.

Hour One: With the Horn of Plenty

Equipped and charged, the Horn of Plenty adds a subtle but impactful boost. After toggling its double-catch effect, the first extra chinchompa proc happened within the first 31 catches, triggering that classic OSRS dopamine rush. While the horn does not increase XP for the double proc, it significantly increases profit per hour, especially for those hunting high-value black chinchompas.

    Results:

    • Black Chinchompas caught: 560
    • Profit: 1.26 million GP

The invisible +4 Hunter boost effectively made my 88 Hunter act as if it were level 92, increasing catch success rates and making hunting smoother and more rewarding.

Hour Two: Without the Horn of Plenty

For comparison, I then hunted for another hour without the horn. The difference was immediately noticeable:

    • Black Chinchompas caught: 432
    • Profit: 965k GP

Extra gained with Horn of Plenty: 128 chinchompas, approximately 285k GP per hour. While the horn itself is initially expensive, the cost of using it is minimal due to the affordability of griffin feathers, making it a worthwhile investment once the price stabilizes.

    Sailing Update Impressions

Beyond the Horn of Plenty, the Sailing skill itself is a refreshing addition to OSRS. My initial experience on day one brought excitement, although XP gains felt slow initially. Thankfully, Jagex adjusted the XP rates shortly after launch, increasing rewards by roughly 20%, making progression more rewarding.

Highlights of Sailing: Lore-friendly and visually stunning. New opportunities for travel, exploration, and deep-sea fishing. Potential for group activities, such as sailing with friends or fishing with high-level boats. Overall, the skill expands the OSRS world and opens the door for future content.

Conclusion: Is the Horn of Plenty Worth It?

For those targeting 99 Hunter, hunting chinchompas, or aiming for the pet, the Horn of Plenty is a highly recommended item. Its effects—both the invisible level boost and the chance to double catches—make a noticeable difference in profit and efficiency. While expensive on day one, the price is expected to drop in the coming weeks, making it more accessible for mid-level players as well.

Key takeaways: Boosts effective Hunter level by +4 when fully charged. 1 in 10 chance to double a Hunter catch. Cheap upkeep due to low feather cost. Significantly increases profit per hour when hunting high-value creatures like black chins. If you’re looking to maximize Hunter XP and profit, the Horn of Plenty is the latest must-have item from the Sailing update.

Sailing and the Horn of Plenty bring new excitement to Old School RuneScape, making both training and money-making more engaging than ever. RSorder is committed to helping players enjoy the game, providing high-quality services such as buying RS gold, items, and boosting.
